Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi continues its economic tour in Morocco. This Wednesday, he declared on platform X: “During my visit to the headquarters of OCP in Casablanca, I had fruitful exchanges with Mr. Ilyas El Fali, director general of the company strategy of the OCP group, and Mr. Mohamed Hettiti, CEO of OCP Africa.”
“At the heart of our discussions was the urgency to accelerate the creation of a fertilizer mixing plant in Kenya, a project that should considerably reduce input costs and improve yields for Kenyan farmers.”
The Minister stressed that “this partnership represents a major advance to guarantee adequate and high quality nutrients to Kenyan soils, adapted to our unique tropical conditions, while strengthening food security and empowering farmers”.
“Kenya is on the right track to deepen its agricultural transformation thanks to a strategic collaboration with the Chérifian office of phosphates (OCP), a Moroccan leader in the production of phosphates and fertilizers,” said Mudavadi.
This Monday, Kenya announced its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara.
As a reminder, a French media had revealed In April 2024 that the OCP planned to build a fertilizer production unit in Kenya. This project was to be announced during a visit to President William Ruto in Morocco, a visit that has not yet taken place. “Minister Kenyan of Agriculture, Mithika Lonturi, collaborates with his counterparts in Rabat and with the Moroccan giant in the sector, OCP, to define the contours of this future infrastructure,” said the French publication.
Kenya could follow the example of Nigeria and Ethiopia, two African countries which benefit from Moroccan expertise in the fertilizer industry while maintaining their recognitions of the “RASD”.
