The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will go to Melilla next Monday to officially inaugurate the new university hospital. This is his first visit to the city since the reopening of commercial customs with Morocco, an event similar to that which occurred in Ceuta a few months ago.
According to local mediaciting government sources, Sánchez will attend the inauguration ceremony of this hospital, which began to offer partial services this week, including its first external consultations. This project was born 19 years after his announcement during a visit by former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
This visit is part of Sánchez’s displacement on March 23, 2022 in Ceuta and Melilla, marking a new stage in relations with Morocco after the change of position of the Spanish government on the question of Western Sahara.
For its part, the Popular Party (opposition) described the opening of the hospital “simple spectacle and political propaganda”. Melilla Senator, Isabel Moreno, stressed that essential sections of the hospital, such as hospital beds, intensive care unit and emergency service, are not yet operational, saying that the main objective of this opening is “to take a photo and cut the ribbon”.
